The Keepers was a secret group formed to guard Ancient Magic.

History[]

Sometime during his adulthood, Percival Rackham, who could see and use ancient magic, realized the potential dangers if such knowledge fell into the wrong hands and thus formed the Keepers to safeguard it with his colleagues. While they were set on guarding it, this didn't stop them from stepping in and saving others when they could, such as the time they went and revived a drought-ridden Feldcroft. Unbeknownst to them at the time, a young Isidora Morganach saw strange swirls in the air as they did this, though her father just wrote it off as her having an active imagination.

Years later, Isidora started to attend Hogwarts during her fifth year and, on recognizing Rookwood, asked him about the swirls. Realizing this meant she could see ancient magic, Isidora was introduced to the group, with Rackham noting he could train her to use it. While they trained though, building beautiful spirals, Isidora couldn't get her mind off her father, who was so deep in his pain over the loss of her brother, he still hadn't uttered a word since he had passed. She questioned Rackham on why, instead of just creating pretty spiral structures, they couldn't also use ancient magic to remove one's pain. While Rackham tried to explain magic wasn't a cure all, this didn't help ease Isidora's mindset.

Years later, after graduating, Isidora returned to Hogwarts, this time as the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. The Keepers went unaware of Isidora's deep desire to find a way to "cure" people's pain like her father's with ancient magic until she invited them back to her home that evening where she introduced her father, who hadn't spoken a word since his son had died from the drought. On arriving, she performed a special spell she'd developed with her ancient magic and pulled the pain out of her father and bottling it away. As her father said his thanks, all the Keepers watched astonished except Rackham, who was immediately apprehensive, noting what he saw in the bottle wasn't ancient magic.

Isidora, feeling she could eventually talk the group around, continued to work in secret removing others' pain and storing it away, but soon realized she needed something far bigger and better to contain it all. She thus enlisted the help of the famed goblin Bragbor to build a repository as she went to try and convince Fitzgerald. However, while Fitzgerald noted it was amazing seeing the results, they still didn't know the long-term effects and more importantly, if they should be removing it. Isidora though pressed on that this is what ancient magic should be used for and how it made her feel more powerful each time she did so. She then tried to perform it on the headmistress without permission, but Fitzgerald managed to quickly stop her before any damage was done.

Eventually, the Keepers learned that not only was it removing all emotions from a person, but also that Isidora was performing it on students while growing ever powerful. Having gone too far now, the Keepers headed into the caves below the school to confront Isidora where Rackham demanded she stand down but Isidora refused, noting they should be using ancient magic to "cure" people and not be hiding it. When Rackham then tried to disarm her, Isidora fired back, knocking Fitzgerald out. As Bakar went to check on the headmistress, Rackham and Rookwood dueled Isidora but were slowly losing. Bakar, seeing his colleagues in danger, cast the killing curse at Isidora, instantly killing her.

Legacy[]

After Isidora was dealt with, the Keepers tried to get rid of the repository, but finding no way to do so safely, their role then took on not just guarding ancient magic, but also keeping the fifth repository below Hogwarts a secret. As part of this, they wiped Bragbor's memories and setup a path to follow as they knew it was only a matter of time before another ancient magic user came along. To make sure the person fully understood the consequences of such, and prevent going down the same dark path that Isidora took, they destroyed Isidora's magical paintings to prevent that version of herself from coming back and setup trials that'd reveal their memories. However, they didn't realize Bragbor had also written journals of the repositories that his later descendant, Ranrok, would discover and wield the twisted form of magic.

Notes[]

  • While Isidora apprenticed to Rackham, she was never made a member of the Keepers
